Kate
waltzed in without knocking, as I knew she would. I waved, and the room
spun. I hadn’t had anywhere close to what Richard had drunk, but he was already
showing off the storm rider metabolism.
Richard had
been quiet for the last five minutes, and I had left him to his thoughts.
“You’re
drunk,” Kate said.
I nodded.
“Don’t take advantage of me. I mean it, cuz you know how sexy you are.”
I thought
for a second, processing the words that had come out of my mouth.
“I din’t
mean to say that last part.”
“Don’t
worry, I won’t molest you while you’re drunk. Drunk guys have a hard time
performing.”
She smiled
like it was a joke, but I didn’t get it.
I tapped
grant on the shoulder because he hadn’t responded to Kate’s entrance. “Ask
‘er,” I said to him.
Richard turned his head to look at Kate. “What happens to me if I don’t learn these
powers?”
“Hard to
say. It’s usually not pleasant. Most likely, you’ll build up a charge greater
than your body can handle, and it will rip you apart as it releases. Probably
kill everyone around you, too.”
“Fuck!”
“Shhh!
Language!” I said. “Oh! Perform! I get it, now.”
